Geogenetics
Geogenetics refers to the geographical spread of specific types of human genome. In particular, geogenetics maps the worldwide dissemination of a given race or ethnicity in order to enable individuals to identify their genetic roots. This process is made possible by drawing comparisons between an individual’s genetic characteristics and those belonging to distinct groups of people. By mapping specific similarities, it is possible to determine the ethnic lineage of the individual and, in doing so, draw inferences about the migratory habits of his or her ancestors.
Geogenetics, therefore, employs ancestral DNA testing to achieve its objectives. Ancestral DNA testing aims to match an individual’s sample DNA, which can be obtained via a swab, with one of a number of DNA entries for a specific population. The population DNA entries are contained in a genetic database and will comprise various geogenetic groups including Africoid (Africa), Caucasoid (Europe), Asiatic (Asia), Mongoloid (South East Asia), Asiatic Mongoloid (Americas) and Australoid (Australia). Furthermore, it is possible to find a match with more specific populations that are of direct relevance to modern communities, such as African–Americans, European–Americans, Hispanic–Americans, Asian–Americans and European–Australians.
Geogenetics is an important tool in locating an individual’s origins. Whilst it is significant for an individual to be able to identify with close family, it is also of immense value for him or her to be able to ascertain their genetic composition in terms of ethnicity. Furthermore, the individual who can trace their racial heritage is one who will have a greater understanding of who they are and where their ancestors came from. Moreover, such knowledge will be accompanied by greater understanding of ethnic diversity.
