Grandparentage Test
In recent years, huge progress has been made to enhance the effectiveness and reliability of DNA testing. The progress made in DNA testing, usually used to determine whether a child is the offspring of two people, means that it can now be used to establish other relationships within a family. Grandparent DNA testing can establish whether a child is the grandchild of a particular individual. In this case, an individual receives half of its DNA from one parent and the other half from the other, it follows that in the child to be tested, a certain proportion of the DNA will have originated in the grandparent. The test can involve testing samples from either one or both grandparents, plus a parent if willing and available, and obviously a sample is required from the child. Tests can easily be ordered through a laboratory, and the swab for testing is usually taken from the inner cheek.
Once the samples have been sent to the laboratory, the DNA provided can be compared. There are a number of reasons why grandparents may wish to have a test done. It can also the case that guardians of the child may require a test to be carried out to try and establish paternity. However, it can also be carried out when the mother is not available. If DNA samples are taken for legal requirements, it is imperative that witnesses are present when the samples are taken; therefore these are usually carried out in a laboratory. It may be possible for home testing kits to be provided.
