GTL DNA Tests and Technology Explained
GTL use state-of-the-art equipment and the latest DNA-based technology. The high speed of our equipment means DNA tests can be completed in 2 days if needed although our standard turnaround time is 5 working days. Immediately DNA testing is completed, the DNA test results are made available to the customer via our Order Status page. In the case of court admissible DNA tests, a hard copy of the DNA test report, signed by a notary, will be issued by post.
We analyse 16 genetic markers which include the same 13 markers used by the FBI and other law enforcement agencies for human identity DNA testing. These 13 genetic markers are known as the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) and are used only in determining human identity. These markers do not reveal any other genetic information about the person being tested and cannot be used to determine predisposition to illnesses or diseases. You can have complete peace of mind knowing that your DNA results can only be used for establishing family relationships.
This DNA testing technology uses a technique known as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) which replaced the previous restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) method. PCR is quicker and more accurate and can be performed using very small samples of DNA. This is one of the reasons why blood samples are no longer needed when carrying out human identity DNA tests.
