About our Aunt/Uncle Testing Service

The lab cannot perform this test if the aunt / uncle is NOT a full sibling to the alleged father in question

When trying to determine an avuncular relationship the most conclusive method, if at all possible, is to test the parent of the child in question. In cases where the parent of the child is not available to provide a DNA sample, an avuncular DNA test can be carried out to determine the probability of the relationship.

Avuncular DNA tests are different from a paternity test which will always provide a conclusive result. When processing an avuncular DNA test, the laboratory will establish the genetic profile of the alleged relative and the child. An avuncular index is calculated using these genetic profiles. If the avuncular DNA index is less than 1.00 it indicates that the tested persons are not related. If the avuncular DNA index is greater than 1.00 it indicates that the tested persons are more likely to be true biological relatives. The higher the avuncular DNA index value, the greater the likelihood that the tested applicants are true biological relatives.

We strongly suggest including the sample of a known parent to provide stronger results.
