In cases where the alleged father, or mother, is missing or deceased, the Missing Parent DNA Test can be used to determine paternity or maternity by testing DNA from the paternal, or maternal, grandparents (parents of the missing alleged father or mother).

For example, a mother has a child and would like to find out if a man (the alleged father) is the child’s biological father but the alleged father is either unavailable, missing or deceased. If the biological parents of the alleged father (i.e. the child’s alleged paternal grandparents) are available then their DNA profiles can be used to determine paternity of the missing alleged father.

Although it is possible to carry out this DNA test with DNA samples from only the child and both alleged grandparents, a more conclusive result will be obtained by including samples from the available parent of the child.

To qualify as an accredited legal DNA test, the DNA sample collection process must be witnessed by a health professional or neutral third party with no interest in the outcome of the test. The identity of the applicants submitting DNA samples must also be verified by photographic proof of identity and 2 passport-sized photographs of each applicant must accompany the samples.
